Background of the Study
Animal cruelty has emerged as a significant ethical concern in contemporary society, and its prevention is increasingly recognized as a moral imperative. In Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State, religious education is being explored as a potential tool for shaping students’ attitudes towards animal welfare and curbing acts of cruelty. Religious doctrines in many traditions emphasize compassion, stewardship, and respect for all living beings, and these values are integrated into the school curricula as a means of promoting ethical treatment of animals (Abdulrahman, 2023; Musa, 2024). In Bauchi LGA, schools have incorporated lessons that link religious teachings with practical issues surrounding animal care, encouraging students to develop empathy and a sense of responsibility towards the natural world. Such educational interventions are particularly important in regions where traditional practices may conflict with modern views on animal rights. The curriculum aims to bridge this gap by using religious narratives and ethical discussions to challenge existing behaviors and foster a more compassionate approach (Bello, 2023). Furthermore, educators employ interactive teaching methods—such as role-playing, debates, and community projects—to reinforce these lessons and create a lasting impact on students’ perceptions and behaviors. The evolving socio-cultural context, which increasingly prioritizes animal welfare, underscores the need for educational programs that are both contextually relevant and ethically robust (Ibrahim, 2023). Despite these efforts, there remains limited empirical evidence on the extent to which religious education influences student attitudes towards animal cruelty in Bauchi LGA. Challenges such as limited resources, resistance to change, and the persistence of traditional views necessitate a comprehensive evaluation of these educational programs. This study will examine the relationship between religious education and students’ attitudes towards animal cruelty, assessing curriculum effectiveness, teacher engagement, and student responses. By analyzing these factors, the research aims to provide actionable insights for enhancing moral education and promoting animal welfare within the community (Sani, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although religious education in Bauchi LGA is designed to instill compassion and ethical behavior towards animals, there is evidence that the intended impact on student attitudes is not fully realized. Teachers and administrators have observed that, despite the inclusion of animal welfare topics in the curriculum, many students continue to exhibit indifferent or even negative attitudes towards issues of animal cruelty (Abdulrahman, 2023). This problem is compounded by cultural practices and economic factors that sometimes conflict with modern ethical standards regarding animal treatment. Additionally, the pedagogical approaches currently used may not be sufficiently engaging or relevant to students’ lived experiences, leading to superficial understanding and limited behavioral change (Ibrahim, 2023). Furthermore, there is a lack of systematic evaluation of the curriculum’s effectiveness in fostering genuine empathy and responsible attitudes towards animals. The gap between curriculum design and classroom reality highlights the need for a comprehensive investigation into the factors that hinder or facilitate the intended moral outcomes. This study will explore the challenges associated with teaching animal welfare within a religious framework and evaluate how these challenges affect student perceptions and behaviors. Addressing this gap is essential for developing more effective educational strategies that align religious teachings with contemporary ethical standards, ultimately contributing to a reduction in animal cruelty (Musa, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the influence of religious education on shaping students’ attitudes towards animal cruelty.

  2. To identify challenges in implementing animal welfare topics within religious education curricula in Bauchi LGA.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of religious education in promoting animal compassion.

Research Questions

  1. How does religious education influence students’ attitudes towards animal cruelty in Bauchi LGA?

  2. What are the challenges faced by educators in integrating animal welfare topics into religious education?

  3. What improvements can be made to the curriculum to foster a more compassionate attitude towards animals?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Religious education significantly improves students’ attitudes towards preventing animal cruelty.

  2. Innovative teaching methods correlate with higher student empathy towards animals.

  3. Cultural and economic factors moderate the impact of religious education on animal welfare attitudes.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the role of religious education in shaping ethical attitudes towards animal cruelty among students in Bauchi LGA. The findings will inform educators and policymakers on how to enhance curriculum content and teaching strategies to promote compassion and responsible behavior towards animals. The research contributes to ethical educational practices and supports broader efforts in animal welfare advocacy (Bello, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to evaluating the influence of religious education on students’ attitudes towards animal cruelty in Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State. It focuses on curriculum content, teaching practices, and local cultural influences within this specific context.
